The Squad That Spells Its Own Name

The 2025-26 Arsenal squad spells THE UNFORGETTABLES — one bold letter per player, top to bottom. The squad that lifted the title decides what it gets called. A typographic puzzle by BPB Designs.

Read the bold letters.

The 2025-26 Arsenal squad, listed top to bottom in roster order. One letter in each name set in bold. Read the bold letters down the column and the squad spells THE UNFORGETTABLES.

The squad that did the thing tells you what the thing is called.

The Name

Thierry Henry said it first, after Arsenal got past Atlético Madrid 2–1 on aggregate in the Champions League semi-final, May 5, 2026 — their first CL final in twenty years. The Invincibles' all-time top scorer, putting the name on the table as a conditional:

"If you guys do it, if you manage to go on and win the title, you will be known as the 'Unforgettables.' We were the 'Invincibles.'"

The title Henry meant was the Champions League — the trophy his Invincibles never won. This squad reached the final, May 30 in Budapest, and came up one penalty short. Havertz scored inside five minutes. Dembélé levelled from the spot. After extra time it went to a shootout, and Gabriel's kick — the fifth — was the one that got saved. PSG kept the cup.

Two weeks before that night, Arsenal had already become Premier League champions for the first time in twenty-two years — the trophy the Invincibles last held, back in North London. Henry set the bar at the Champions League and they fell a penalty short of clearing it. The name holds anyway. Henry's own Invincibles never won Europe either — knocked out in the quarter-finals the same season they went unbeaten. The names outlive the silverware. "Unforgettable" was never only the trophy that got away. It's the twenty-two years that ended, the squad that ended them, and a final North London will be arguing about for a generation.

The Puzzle

The shirt prints the full 2025-26 squad as the sheet would print it. Goalkeeper first. Defenders, midfielders, forwards. Each name carries one letter rendered in bold.

Read the bold letters down the column:

T · H · E · U · N · F · O · R · G · E · T · T · A · B · L · E · S

Seventeen names. Seventeen bold letters. One squad spelling its own name.

It isn't a typo and it isn't a coincidence. It's the design saying we know exactly who did this.

The Ø

Martin Ødegaard's name carries the Ø. In Norwegian it's a vowel close to the "u" in English "fur." In the puzzle it does double duty as the O in UNFORGETTABLES.

Norwegian alphabet, English wordplay, one squad. The captain's letter is also the squad's hinge.

The Manager Line

Under the roster, one more name with trophy icons flanking it: 🏆 Arteta 🏆.

Mikel Arteta. The first former Premier League player to win the title as a manager. He's not in the bold-letter puzzle, because managers aren't on the squad sheet. But he gets his own line and his own flanks. The league wasn't going to lift itself.

The Substitutes

Below the puzzle, in smaller type, the substitutes. Present on the shirt, off the puzzle. They were on the matchday sheet, not the spelling.

The puzzle is exactly seventeen letters long. The squad is bigger than that. The shirt honors both — the players who carried the letters, and the players who carried the bench.

Including the eighteen-year-old who answered Haaland with a goal and a meditation pose, and who carries one of the letters now.

The Designer

The design is by BPB Designs — contributing designer on the Arsenal range. Typographic puzzle, classical inscription instincts, the kind of layout that earns its weight the second time you look at it.

The Shirt

Wear it to the parade. Wear it to the Champions League final viewing. Wear it to the next conversation that starts with "is that... wait, what does that say?" and let the other person read down the column themselves.

The 22 years between Invincibles and Unforgettables ended on May 19, 2026. This is the squad that ended it. This is the shirt that prints it.
